Over the last five years, emergency preparedness has taken on a broader meaning nationally. It is more critical than ever that we prepare ourselves for a multitude of potential hazards in our rural, agriculturally based region not previously addressed n Northwestern Minnesota. We need to ready ourselves not only for the types of natural and agricultural emergencies already familiar to us, but also for other types of emergencies such as terrorism, biological, radiological and chemical attacks, and medical pandemics.
The Emergency Response and Crisis Management Initiative involves school districts, special education, law enforcement, emergency operations, Homeland Security, public health, mental health, county government and local businesses, representing a model for rural communities to develop and promote the strong working relationships necessary to keep our children and families healthy and safe throughout the counties of Kittson, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Polk and Red Lake.
In addition to the Emergency Response Crisis Management grant, the Northwest Minnesota Council of Collaboratives currently has six other primary focus areas. These are adolescent chemical health, children’s mental health, disaster mental health, early childhood, physical education, and safe schools/ healthy students.
