Topic: This ethnographic study addresses the overrepresentation of African American youth referred for academic instruction in classes for learners identified as having behavioral/emotional disorders. The author suggests ways to understand culturally socialized behaviors and to use more culturally responsive pedagogy.

Making the Case: Linking Prevention to Academic Success (TRAINING) -- (10-22-03) -- The Safe and Drug Free Schools Program within the Minnesota Department of Education is presenting a series of full day workshops linking prevention efforts to academic success in students. Topics covered will include: how to involve parents in schools, the research behind "best practices" in prevention; what the Minnesota Student Survey data tells us about Minnesota youth; the link between tobacco use and other risk behaviors; highlights of the newest prevention curriculum; and safe schools and what that means in Minnesota. U study: Teens who think they'll die young live fast -- (06-29-09) -- A self-fulfilling prophecy? Teens who are less hopeful seem to engage in riskier behavior, a University of Minnesota study found. For example, they were seven times more likely to later be diagnosed with HIV or AIDS.

Early Childhood Training Opportunity - Oct. 18 - Free Videoconference -- (10-07-06) -- Drawing on over 30 years of longitudinal research at the University of Minnesota, this workshop will provide a detailed foundation for understanding parent-child attachment. How to Create a Safe and Respectful School Climate Forum - Oct. 14 -- (09-23-05) -- Nationally recognized research shows students' health and future success are closely linked to how connected they feel to their school. Feeling connected to school is also associated with lower levels of violent behavior, and protects students from cigarette, alcohol and drug use. However bullying and other disruptive behavior disconnects students from school. Schools are seeking practical solutions to create a positive climate and build connections with students. Our presenter will be Shelley Freeman, an educator, author and consultant. She will talk about teasing, harassment, bullying and physical violence. She will also address how to create a safe and respectful environment, which builds student connectedness to schools.

Outcomes for Youth Following Psychiatric Emergencies -- (09-13-05) -- This article presents results of an investigation of outcomes for youth following referral for emergency mental health services, and randomly assigned to either home-based multisystemic therapy (MST) or hospitalization. The findings indicate that outcomes for youth receiving intensive mental health services are influenced by a complex array of clinical and psychosocial factors.

2nd Annual Youth Intevention Summer Institute - Working with Challenging Youth -- (06-02-05) -- Consistently over the past few years, attendees at YIPA professional development workshops have asked for a more in-depth training opportunity, focusing on practical application of theory and methods. In order to meet this need, a four-day Youth Intervention Summer Institute was first offered Summer of 2004. The Institute was designed to integrate research, theory and innovative practices and provide participants with the necessary constructs to apply these teachings in their respective settings/locales. Based upon feedback from last year's participants, this year's format has been expanded to include topic specific workshops as well as a case study session. Department of Education Releases High School MCA Test Results -- (07-19-04) -- Department of Education officials released test results today from the 10th grade reading and 11th grade math Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs). It found that adolescents who perceived great risk from smoking marijuana once a month were much less likely to have used marijuana in the past month than those who perceived moderate to no risk.

While Admissions for Marijuana Double and Stimulants Triple -- (04-18-06) -- The percentage of admissions to state-funded substance abuse treatment facilities for primary* alcohol abuse declined from 1993 to 2003, according to data from the national Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). While alcohol continues to be the substance most frequently cited as a primary substance of abuse, primary alcohol abuse accounted for less than one-half (41%) of all admission in 2003 (the most recent year for which data are available), down from 57% in 1993. The percentage of admissions for primary cocaine abuse also decreased, from 17% to 14%. At the same time, the percentage of admissions for primary abuse of stimulants (including methamphetamine and prescription stimulants) tripled and marijuana more than doubled while primary opiate admissions also increased (from 13% to 18%).

How Youths Obtain Marijuana -- (03-09-04) -- The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (USDUH) formerly known as the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), asked respondents to report their use of marijuana during the year prior to the interview. The 2002 survey also asked past year marijuana users to report how they obtained marijuana the last time they used it, from whom they obtained it and where they were when they obtained it. This report focuses on youths age 12 to 17 and responses were analyzed by gender and racial/ethnic groups for comparative purposes.

This is not surprising given the fact that inactivity has contributed to the recent obesity epidemic and sedentary living is a known threat to health.

Unsupervised Time Family and Child Factors Associated with Self-Care -- (12-10-03) -- Who's home alone while their parents work? Each week in the United States, 3.3 million children under age 13 are regularly left without adult supervision,according to data from the 1999 round of the National Survey of America's Families. Of those children who care for themselves, seven percent are under the age of 10, and 12 percent are living in low-income families, two groups that may be particularly vulnerable when spending time unsupervised. While children using self-care spend on average less than an hour each weekday unsupervised, 16 percent spend 10 or more hours a week unsupervised.

2004 Legistlative Session - Continuing Care Provisions -- (07-09-04) -- A key task of the 2004 legislative session was to resolve a budget deficit of $160 million in the 2004-2005 biennium. The House and Senate had very different approaches to resolving the deficit and the 2004 regular legislative session ended with no budget bills enacted. Using his executive authority, the Governor resolved the deficit using a combination of administrative reductions. He did this by withholding transfers to the Health Care Access Fund, increasing tax compliance efforts at the Department of Revenue and delaying the sale of bonds for previously authorized capital projects.

Poverty, Stress, and Violent Disagreements in the Home among Rural Families -- (01-30-08) -- Violence in the home is not an "adults only" issue. Studies have shown that witnessing domestic violence increases a child’s chance of having emotional/ behavioral problems and being in abusive relationships in adulthood, even without co-occurring child maltreatment. The study reported here used information from a large, nationally representative telephone survey of households with children, carried out by the National Center for Health Statistics, to explore the prevalence of violent disagreements in the home.

High School Football Teams Reflect Changes in Rural Life -- (09-14-07) -- The northwestern Minnesota towns of Stephen and Argyle, populations 708 and 656 respectively, are separated by nine flat miles of soybean and wheat. The highest point between them is the mounded dirt that elevates the railroad tracks connecting their grain elevators. Since consolidating their schools in 1996, they have dominated nine-man football, never missing a state semifinal.The impact of changing demographics and farming technology in this region is apparent in the student body and, on Friday nights, on the football field.

One-third of rural pharmacists consider closing under new Medicare plan -- (08-24-06) -- A recent survey of more than 500 community pharmacists underscores the serious reimbursement problems that have plagued the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, according to the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA). Nearly nine out of 10 pharmacists surveyed (89 percent) said that their overall cash flow was worse now than before the Part D program started; thirty-three percent said they had considered closing their pharmacy as a result.

-- (08-02-06) -- The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy interests of students. It affords parents the right to access and amend their children’s education records, and gives them some control over the disclosure of information in these records. FERPA does allow the disclosure of student data without parental consent under certain, specified conditions. The National Forum on Education Statistics has recently developed a guide to help school and local education agency staff to better understand and apply FERPA.

2008-09 Lessons from the Field Series - Workshop #3 - Multi-disciplinary Interventions - April 14, 2009 -- (04-10-09) -- The third workshop in the 2008-09 Lessons from the Field Series will feature Dr. Randi Hagerman, a professor of pediatrics and the endowed chair of Fragile X research at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, where she also serves as the medical director of the M.I.N.D. Institute. Dr. Hagerman has a strong clinical and research interest in autism and the association between autism and Fragile X syndrome. Her presentation will focus on current multidisciplinary aspects of treatment, intersection of autism and Fragile X, and developmental targeted treatments which require multidisciplinary interventions to be effective in treating autism spectrum disorders. Amy Esler, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, UMN, and psychologist with the UMN Children's Hospital, will present on behavioral interventions and their application in working with autistic children and their families.

Crime, Violence, Discipline, and Safety in U.S. Public Schools, Findings from the School Survey on Crime and Safety: 2005-06 -- (09-25-07) -- This report, released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), uses data from the 2005–06 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS) to examine a range of issues dealing with school crime and safety, such as the frequency of school crime and violence, disciplinary actions, and school practices related to the prevention and reduction of crime and safety. SSOCS is the primary source of school-level data on crime and safety for NCES.
