Psychological First Aid (PFA) Field Operations Guide

The Psychological First Aid Field Operations Guide was developed by the National Center for PTSD and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

The MRC Mental Health Work Group worked in collaboration with the above experts to further enhance the document and create a special MRC adaptation. As a result, in addition to the PFA trademark, this document also carries a triple logo, MRC/ NCPTSD/NCTSN.

This publication will serve as a resource to the entire MRC network. Below you'll find some basic tips on use of the MRC PFA.

Use of PFA:

The PFA will continuously be updated and expanded. Its function at this time is to serve as a reference for all MRC volunteers in assisting individuals in the immediate aftermath of disaster. The MRC PFA is designed to be a Field Operations Guide and not as a complete text for training purposes. The MRC Mental Health Work Group recommends that all MRC volunteers familiarize themselves with the content of this document, particularly if your unit is going to be supporting response activities at the local, state or federal levels. Included in the Appendix of the PFA is a Debriefing Position Statement. Please make sure that your unit is aware of the work group's position on debriefing.

Future PFA:

The NCTSN/ NCPTSD recently released the 2nd edition of the PFA. The MRC Mental Health Work Group will continue to update materials in the MRC PFA 1st Edition, based upon adaptations from the latest PFA and new references. The work group is also working toward recommending materials specific to mental health operations in public health and medical settings.

If you have any feedback regarding usefulness or areas of need for the publication, please feel free to contact the MRC Mental Health Work Group.
